Dr. Lukanich's practice of Thoracic Surgery combines a busy tertiary and quadrinary clincial practice at BWH and the Boston VA Medical Center, with a community based practice at a number of area hospitals. This practice includes a busy operative schedule, participation on the inpatient referral and lung transplant services, outpatient multimodality and follow-up clinics, daily SICU and inpatient care and participation in many multimodality clinical conferences. The scope of her practice includes the whole spectrum of thoracic surgical diseases, from common benign disorders to complex outside referrals to lung transplantation.
Dr. Lukanich has instituted a comprehensive thoracic surgical program at the Boston VA Hospitals, which in its first year more than tripled the total number of operations performed at the Jamaica Plain and West Roxbury VA Hospitals over the previous year. She has also organized a multimodality approach to Thoracic Oncology at these institutions. A thoracic surgery follow up clinic, which had been completely defunct for several years, was revived with overwhelming success.
Dr. Lukanich is also part of the Lung Transplant Team at BWH and participates in daily rounds, transplant evaluations and transplant operations. She has been the primary instructor of the fellows in harvesting organs for the past three years.
Dr. Lukanich is originally from the Midwest, and received her medical degree from Johns Hopkins University. She is board certified in Surgery and trained in Cardiothoracic Surgery at Queen's University and University of Toronto in Ontario, Canada. She joined the Division in 1996. Her interests include benign and malignant esophageal diseases and minimally invasive thoracic surgery. She is an Instructor of Surgery at Harvard Medical School. Dr. Lukanich is also the Director of the BWH and DFCI Women's Lung Cancer Program.
