
Dr. Mentzer joined the Division in 1990. He received his surgical training at Brigham and Women's Hospital and completed a Thoracic Surgery Fellowship at the University of Toronto, Canada. He is board certified in Thoracic Surgery, Surgery, and Surgical Critical Care. His clinical interests include video-assisted thoracic surgery (VATS) for benign and malignant diseases of the lung, lung reduction surgery for emphysema, lung cancer, and esophageal cancer. He conducts research on microvascular adaptations to inflammation, with a clinical focus on immunologic disease and lung transplant rejection. Dr. Mentzer is a Professor of Surgery at Harvard Medical School, and the Director of the Thoracic Intensive Care Unit at Brigham and Women's Hospital./p>
